Skimmers at Lido Beach FL

This is an original oil painting completed on stretched canvas and framed ready to hang.
Skimmers are popular in Southwest Florida during the spring nesting season. Thousands build their nests on the ground and fly off in search of fish to bring back to their babies. The chicks are the same color as the sand so sometimes hard to spot.
Hundreds of skimmers were at Lido Beach FL and returning with their catch. Skimmers feed by opening the bill and dropping the long, narrow lower mandible into the water, skimming along until they feel a fish. Then they quickly close their jaws and whip the fish out of the water.
The nesting areas are usually roped off, but this is a great sight to see.
